A session on the idea of justice and how the Supreme Court of India strives to face the challenges of a changing world.

Former Chief Justice of Orissa High Court Justice S. Muralidhar has also practised law in the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court for nearly two decades. Justice Madan B. Lokur is presently a Judge of the Supreme Court of Fiji, was appointed the Additional Solicitor General of India, and has also been a Judge at the Delhi High Court and a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. Sital Kalantry and Aparna Chandra's co-authored book, Court on Trial: A Data-Driven Account of the Supreme Court of India, builds on deep research to observe the challenges and trials faced by the Supreme court and its processes. The narrative provides an overview of the Supreme Court and presents data-driven suggestions for improving its effectiveness. In conversation with former Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court and Telangana High Court, Chief Justice Chauhan, an illustrious panel weaves through the past, present and future to provide a holistic account of the highest court of justice.

Madan B. Lokur, presently a Judge of the Supreme Court of Fiji, was enrolled as a lawyer in 1977. He was appointed the Additional Solicitor General of India, and has also been a Judge of the Delhi High Court and later the Chief Justice, Gauhati and Andhra Pradesh High Courts. He was a Judge of the Supreme Court of India till December, 2018.

S. Muralidhar practised law in the Supreme Court of India and the Delhi High Court for nearly two decades. He conducted several pro bono and PIL cases. Apart from being the counsel for the Election Commission of India and the National Human Rights Commission, he was a part-time member of the Law Commission from December 2002 till May 2006. Muralidhar was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Delhi in May 2006 and became the Chief Justice of the High Court of Orissa in January 2021. Many of his judgments have contributed to the development of laws. Among his notable initiatives include the setting up of the Centre for Judicial Archives and the Museum of Justice in Cuttack.

Sital Kalantry is a law professor who writes on law and legal institutions in India and the United States. Her first book, Women’s Rights and Migration, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press, examined reproductive rights globally. Her new co-authored book, Court on Trial, published by Penguin Press, unshrouds workings of Indian Supreme Court, using data. She has written over 40 articles, is a regular media commentator, blogger, and podcaster. She has won numerous multi-million-dollar grants as a Fulbright distinguished scholar.

Aparna Chandra is an Associate Professor of Law at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, where she teaches and researches on constitutional law, comparative law, gender and the law, and judicial process reform. She has previously worked at the National Judicial Academy, Bhopal, and the National Law University, Delhi, where she founded the Centre for Constitutional Law, Policy and Governance.

Justice Raghavendra Singh Chauhan practised in the Rajasthan High Court for twenty-two years. He was elevated as a High Court Judge of Rajasthan in 2005. Joined the Karnataka High Court in 2015, where he was one of the senior most Judges. In November 2018, he was transferred to the combined High Court of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He was elevated as the Chief Justice of Telangana High Court in June 2019. He took over as the Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court in January 2021. He retired in December 2021. Presently, he is doing arbitration work in New Delhi.
