In this interview, Loretta Jackson Brown recalls her experiences serving in the United States Air Force as a nurse during the War on Terrorism. She recalls her youth, her family's military experience, and her becoming the first officer in the family. She attained her nursing degree at Florida State University, where she describes a visit with an Air Force recruiter that convinced her to consider joining. She describes the adjustment period of joining the military, the chain of command and finally understanding leadership. Brown explains her duties as an Air Force critical care nurse working in nephrology and performing dialysis treatments. She notes retiring from the Air Force with more compassion, respect for value systems and relationships, and the importance of leaving the world a better place.
