How many differrent services do you have in your organization? And how many communication routes can their messages take? If the answer to the first question is "more than 10", then the answer to the second one is "more than 100", perhaps "more than 1000". Tracing failing workflows and performance bottlenecks in distributed systems is usually hard and time-consuming. And learning custom dashboards and log indexes is not an experience that is easy to generalize.

Not anymore. The world has learned and does not want to keep reinventing wheels. At least some wheels. The OpenTelemetry sets the common standard for exporting application metrics and tracing so they can be aggregated across multiple applications and platforms. And visualized using popular backends and dashboards, such as Datadog, Elastic and Application Insights.

In this session we will look at the principles of OpenTelemetry tracing and go through a few examples of how to use it in Web services, databases, message queues and export to different backends.
