Madeleines are French tea cake with a distinctive shell-like shape, with a nice golden colored stripes on the one side and bump of puff on the other. They are thick in size, but light, soft, and smooth in texture similar to a sponge cake. It has a buttery flavor but some traditional recipes also include fine nuts, lemon zest and vanilla.
This recipe is perfect for an after dinner dessert or for a sweet treat any time of the day. They are perfect with tea, coffee or hot chocolate. I usually make the batter ahead of time and just store it in the fridge for up to 6 days, that way I have fresh madeleines anytime I want. Madeleines are best enjoyed freshly baked so it's a good thing this mini madeleines only takes 4 to 6 minutes to bake!
