The seventeenth season of Grey’s Anatomy has been a total rollercoaster - it honestly seems like anything could be possible! CGI has actually played a much bigger role in the series than we initially thought. Most recently, it brought Lexie Grey’s face back to our screens in a heartwarming reunion between her, Mark Sloan and Meredith, but the fact is - only Sloan and Meredith were part of the reunion in real life since Chyler Leigh was stuck in Canada shooting another series! She isn’t the only major character that’s been included with CGI though - Alex Karev was never actually meant to be in the series! His role was only added after the pilot had been shot, so his brief appearances that are in the pilot are actually courtesy of CGI! There’s only one scene in the whole pilot that Karev actually shot with the Grey’s team.
How did the show convincingly portray Arizona Robbins after she lost part of her leg? Look no further than CGI - which was used to bring dream moments to life as well as to hide the actor’s actual leg both when and when she wasn’t wearing a prosthetic leg. We were shocked to learn how much the regular settings we see are actually brought to screen using CGI! From the interior of the hospital, to the exterior, to bars or restaurants… most of it was actually in the studio. The Seattle skyline we know and love? It’s usually not the actual view the actors have at all! From the major disaster scenes to cimple shots in a park - we’re covering all these surprising instances of CGI in the series!
