Semi final showdown in the 2000 Absolute division of the IBJJF World championship, between two rising stars, Leonardo Leite & Fernando Pontes

Leonardo Leite, also known as Léo, is possibly the most successful Judoka to have entered the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The Brazilian National Judo Team representative is also a BJJ black belt under Alexandre “Gigi” Paiva from the Alliance Rio de Janeiro academy having won 2 world BJJ championships and 3 Brazilian Jiu Jitsu National gold medals. Leo Leite also competed in mixed martial arts (MMA), having debuted in 2013 with a submission victory over Alessandro Macedo.

Fernando Pontes, mostly known as “Margarida” within the jiu-jitsu community, is a former open weight world champion in the sport. Margarida’s aggressive and entertaining style made him one of the most revered grapplers in the early 2000’s, he was also known for his irreverence in and outside of the mats. His high-class technical abilities and his personality made him one of the more recognizable sporting figures of his generation in Brazil.
