On 6 December 1984, filmmakers David Lynch and Raffaella De Laurentiis were interviewed by ITN's Stephen Phillips on their new big-budget sci-fi epic, Dune. Costing just over $40 million, the film was expected to compete with peers in the genre such as Star Wars as well as Christmas blockbuster rivals Ghostbusters and Gremlins. In the end, the film received largely negative reviews and recovered only around $32 million of the money spent on production. The film found greater success and appreciation later on, and in 2021 was remade starring Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides. Chalamet's latest film, Wonka, is expected to become the Christmas blockbuster of 2024.
