►The oil pan is essentially a bucket mounted to the bottom of the engine that holds all of its oil. BMW uses a metal and rubber gasket to seal the pan against the engine block, which will dry out over time. Replacing the oil pan gasket on your E9X-generation 3-series has become far more common as they've aged, and it's likely something you'll have to deal with as a future or current owner.
Leaving the leaking oil pan gasket will slowly drain your engine of oil and allow dirt and other contaminants inside. The escaping oil can also compromise rubber hoses, causing them to become spongey. Although replacing the oil pan gasket is involved, do your best to change it ASAP.
In this video, FCP Euro BMW Expert Gareth Foley replaces the N52 oil pan gasket on a BMW E90 328xi.
