A she-wolf wanders in the village and almost attacks Sweetheart, Theresa’s goat. Mr Keller, Theresa’s father, organises a hunt in the woods with the blacksmith. The teacher, who thinks, instead of killing the wolf, they should find out why she’s there in the first place, goes with them. In the meantime, Heidi finds a cub in the woods. She thinks it’s a puppy and doesn’t realise it’s a wolf cub. It’s wounded and she helps it out of a wolf trap.
Grandfather, who went down to the village to see what is going on, realises that Heidi is alone in the woods while there is a hunt going on. He fears for Heidi and rushes back up to his cabin. From there, he follows Heidi’s tracks in the snow.
