We all know comic strips. Garfield, The Far Side, and old newspaper staples. Then there’s the web comics. Penny Arcade, XKCD, and hundreds more.

But every now and then, a comic strip proves to be inscrutable. Alien. Its punchline isn’t immediately clear. It’s…. weird.

And the internet loves these! They erupt into meme culture and cement themselves as internet legend. What’s the psychology behind this? Why do we love nonsense comics?
