Financial literacy is not part of our education, to our detriment. As much as I’m sure many of us do this work because we love it, and we get joy from being a supporter of other humans, the reality is that we live in a capitalist society, and we have to make money to survive. The reality is that we deserve to have the knowledge to not only live, but thrive in a world that demands transactional relationships.
Here are my three tips for self-employed/contracting music therapists.
1. Pay your taxes quarterly.
2.Track your mileage for optimal tax credit.
3. Classifying your expenses: business vs. personal.
DISCLAIMER: I am by no means a financial advisor. These are just things that I've learned on my own, but I would also recommend contacting a tax accountant or financial advisor with any questions.
