The Northwestern Center for Advancing Safety of Machine Intelligence (CASMI) co-hosted a workshop on October 16-17 in Washington, D.C. titled “Operationalizing the Measure Function of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Risk Management Framework.”

Cathy O’Neil, CEO of O'Neil Risk Consulting & Algorithmic Auditing (ORCAA) and author of the bestselling book "Weapons of Math Destruction" discussed her work measuring AI harms and investigating whether algorithms produce bad outcomes for protected groups.

The event also included the following speakers: Rumman Chowdhury, Humane Intelligence founder and CEO; Nicholas Diakopoulos, professor of communication studies in Northwestern’s School of Communication and (by courtesy) of computer science in Northwestern Engineering; and Reva Schwartz, NIST research scientist.
