Our modern international system is based on the principle of sovereignty, where countries have nearly complete control over what goes on in their own borders and where they respect the border of other countries.

But this wasn’t always the case. Countries, as we know them, have only existed for a several hundred years. Before that, other political systems like Feudalism were dominant. But that all changed after a particularly bloody conflict: the 30 Years’ War.
