This is the site of Burnside's "Mud March" outside of Fredericksburg, VA in January 1863. The foliage you see here is about what the area would have looked like during the march, minus the pouring rain, of course.
The site is somewhat difficult to get to as River Road only has one place to pull off the road and it will only accommodate three cars.
The trailhead is at 38.30851 degrees N and 77.53217 degrees north.
