WW II Battlefield Box Treasure

Military personnel in Russia discovered something amazing while digging into the ground. It was a large and solid metal case that looked like a treasure. Inside, to the surprise of all who were present, was an assortment of World War paraphernalia. Among the items were cigars, a Nazi soldier hat and uniform, a few bottles of booze, some German money and a few personal belongings. It turned out that the owner was an army veterinarian. He probably hid everything he could and decided to run. His fate remains unknown.

Reichsbank Gold

In March 1945, the Reich minister for Education made the decision to transfer Germany's priceless art treasures to mines for safekeeping. There were twelve entrances and almost 35 kilometers of tunnels within the Merkers mine complex. The Germans moved one-fourth of the significant contents of fourteen of the main Prussian state museums to Merkers between March 20 and March 31. The United States Army found numerous stolen works of art and substantial quantities of Nazi gold in 1945. In April 1945, General Dwight D. Eisenhower himself entered the mine to see the discovery. The Merkers Adventure Mines are currently a popular tourist destination in the area.
