For 2024, the 4th generation Toyota Tacoma is ALL NEW and finally delivers the goods when it comes to taking your Tacoma off paved roads. This TRD OffRoad is the 5th most expensive trim in a lineup of six trims that tops out over $50K with the Limited model - the OffRoad starts around $43,295.

For 2024, every single Tacoma comes with a turbocharged 2.4L 4-cylinder engine but there are 3 different configurations of that engine available - 2 gas engines and one hybrid, which Toyota calls the iForce Max. The base engine is only available in the entry level SR trim and comes with 228hp. The more powerful 2.4L engine pumps out 278hp and 317lb ft of torque. RWD and 4WD are available, and buyers can choose between an 8-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission.

Towing capacity is decent at up to 6500lbs for auto Tacos; 5 or 6 foot cargo beds are available depending on crew or extended cab setup. MPGs, however, aren’t that impressive at 20/23 for 4WD models and 21/26 for RWD.

Not only has Toyota plucked, snipped, trimmed, and updated the exterior to near perfection - the INSIDE also gets a major facelift. Big improvements have been made in design, comfort and available packages - the screens are higher quality and the materials throughout are more upscale. That said, there’s still a lot of plastic on the dash and the doors, and electric blue accent inserts in the dash and door panels might not vibe with everyone’s style. An 8” touchscreen is standard while a 14” screen is optional; most Tacos have a 7” digital gauge cluster while the TRD OffRoad and higher models have a 12.3” screen that is an absolute must in our opinion. A JBL premium sound system with a removable Bluetooth speaker is available, as is Heads up display and heated/cooled seats, while wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The rear seat is cramped and is better fit for cargo and things than people; smaller adults and kids are best stowed back there.

Thanks to rear coil spring suspension on most Tacos except the SR trim with a leaf spring setup, the ride is smooth and comfortable, and the cabin is relatively quiet. When you thwack the accelerator, the engine is noisier than we’d like and the auto tranny isn’t as smooth as it could be. In all, Toyota has an OffRoad warrior worthy of praise and we think diehard fans will find this 4th generation to be pure perfection.
