Sony Pictures Animation’s recent lineup does not seem to hold much promise at first glance. You see, after a bunch of sequels, spin-offs and reboots, one can’t help but wonder: are there any studios that are still willing to take risks? Well, good news, because yes. In 2018 Sony Pictures Animation released the critically-acclaimed first part of its Spider-Verse trilogy, but even with all the praise and glory, even that project is based on an existing IP. Luckily, the studio did not forget to tell original stories; enter the Mitchells. As if wanting to prove a point to audiences, three years later Sony released a heartfelt story about a family taking risks on an ultimate cross-country road trip in a quest to save the world.
