Short Film: Coming to Terms
Written and Directed by: Kait Gallagher
Produced by: Kait Gallagher
Cast: Kea Trevett, Anthony Franqui, Molly McCluskey, Madeleine Mfuru

Coming to Terms is the story of a young woman, Ellie, as she comes to terms with the fact that she's an alcoholic. Caught in the grips of shame, she's forced to face not only her drinking but herself.

Ellie is a busy young woman living in the city who apparently has her life under control, trying to
balance work and her personal life. An alcoholic and addicted, Ellie finds it difficult to control
herself when drinking and ends up in regrettable situations she cannot remember. Living in
constant anxiety and fear of committing something shameful, she tries to keep on and contacts
her friends who reproach and humiliate the rehab process, leaving Ellie alone with her own
brawl. Through her perspective, we see how her “expected” breakdowns are simply muted and
no melodrama happens. When she decides to tackle her dilemma, she isolates herself, trying to
cope with her social life which undoubtedly involves alcohol, trying to hide the truth from her
friends, and herself.

While Ellie tries to reach out for help, rehab processes are mocked and alcoholism and
addiction are taboo subjects, pulling down shame and denial on her. She decides to become
vulnerable and accept her need for change which opens her a window to a new beginning.
Ellie’s transition becomes a relatable model for many, as it feels honest and true to life, while
we see through her troubles and flaws but also dignity and decency from her. At first sight, her
libertine attitude becomes easy to judge until we understand to full scopes her internal duel,
suffering in silence, fearing social judgment and immediate shame.

Coming to Terms is a touching drama, vastly encouraged by the great acting, particularly
inspiring at the heartbreaking vulnerability Ellie is in while trying to hide everything from the rest. Her performance shifts perfectly between her inner dark moments and her outward appearance trying to merge at the very end. Is she willing to take action? We really hope so.
