Introduction
Citizenship in a Republic is the title of a speech given by Theodore Roosevelt, former President of the United States, at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, on April 23, 1910. One notable passage from the speech is referred to as "The Man in the Arena."

BlueMoon's Thoughts
This is one of the greatest and most inspirational speeches ever written – the key point is that it does not need to only relate to sportsmen and the military elite but also to life in general.

In a lessor known but equally motivating speech, also from Roosevelt, given in 1899; he states the main point of his speech (“The Strenuous Life”) in the opening remarks: “I wish to preach, not the doctrine of ignoble ease, but the doctrine of the strenuous life, the life of toil and effort, of labour and strife; to preach that highest form of success which comes, not to the man who desires mere easy peace, but to the man who does not shrink from danger, from hardship, or from bitter toil, and who out of these wins the splendid ultimate triumph.”
