Najeonjang refers to a craftsman or artisan who makes lacquerware inlaid with mother-of-pearl.
The wooden base may be directly inlaid with mother-of-pearl, but usually hemp or ramie cloth is applied on the wooden base and lacquer is applied before attaching the mother-of-pearl and polishing it, which is why the term, “lacquerware,” is typically used to describe mother-of-pearl works in Korea.
Mother-of-pearl wardrobes and armoires, which were seen in nearly every home in Korea in the past, have gradually lost their popularity, but the dazzling colors of the mother-of-pearl still shine from those that have survived for years. They are also being reinterpreted and globalized by being incorporated with the latest trends.
In this episode, we examine the process through which the splendid Seongnyumun Gwaban is created by Lee Hyeong-man, a master of najeonjang (National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 10).
