Hey everyone, today we are going to talk about something that seems like a great idea but is a little tricker than you might expect and that is how to use a draft system like a BBQ Guru on a Char-Griller Akorn. With Char-Griller’s recent release of the new Auto Kamado, I’m sure some folks who already have an existing Akorn are wanting to go out and buy a draft system to use forced air on their cooker so they don’t need to babysit it as often. While that is a great plan, and I’ve done it a lot over the years that I’ve owned different Akorns, when it comes to Kamado grills, there is one big trick I think you need to know before you try this to increase your likelihood of success. You see, When it comes to Kamados and digital temp probes, the one thing they don't take into account is that while a fire is building in a kamado like the Akorn, that heat isn’t going to dissipate as fast as it does in other grills. What most people do is get a small fire in their kamado, put a fan on it, and as the fan blows, it creates a fire that is far too big to run smoking temperatures at before the digital thermometer realizes that we have hit our desired temperature. By the time it does recognize it its already too late and the fire is much larger than it should be. The exception to this is the new Auto Kamado which is specifically tuned for the Akorn’s behavior and honestly performs better than I could ever make a guru perform on an older Akorn. How we must counteract this is simple. Set up your draft system just like you normally would, except, after you light your fire, do not put the fan in the fan port. Watch the temperature on the controller, but use the top vent to adjust and throttle back just like you were if you were going to run your cooker without the draft system. Once you bring it into the desired temperature, then you can insert the fan into the port and allow it to take over and manage the now established fire. I promise you if you take these steps with a draft system on an Akorn you will have a much better time adjusting to the use of forced air on your cooker. I hope this helps and if you give it a shot, let me know how it works for you. #kamado #Chargrillerakorn #bbqguru
