An electric vehicle (EV) revolution is revving up in Southeast Asia and Malaysia has started warming up its engine. EV development is one of four new growth areas adopted for the nation’s master plan due to its numerous links with other sectors and its potential downstream impact.

While the government has attracted billions in foreign investment to boost the EV scene in Malaysia, there are concerns over whether these vehicles are truly the ‘greener’ choice, with its manufacturing process taking the heat for high carbon emissions. In addition, as electricity grids are mostly powered by coal and other fossil fuels, maintaining an EV is not without a carbon footprint. While efforts are underway to ensure the EV ecosystem is cleaner and more sustainable, the Malaysian government and industry stakeholders have their work cut out for them to convince vehicle owners to make the switch.
