Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) have just concluded their 15th summit in Johannesburg. What began as an investment tag line from Goldman Sachs has grown into an alternative power center in a changing world. Could BRICS become a pro-China club? Will India block expansion? Is BRICS the best way to bring about greater equity in the global financial order? How will the West respond? These are just a few of the questions Global Eyes examines. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said in the run-up to the summit that some 40 countries were seeking to join the group that says it wants to change the global financial order established by the West in the wake of World War Two and run by Western-dominated organizations such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund ever since. Global Eyes hosts Isha Bhatia Sanan and William Glucroft sat down with Sushant Singh, a senior fellow at the Delhi-based Centre for Policy Research (CPR) and Professor Daniel Bradlow of the University of Pretoria’s Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship to examine the future of the organization, including the possible membership of Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Argentina, to name just a few of the countries reportedly seeking to join the group.
