I lived this way for years. Decades maybe. And I still fall into those old patterns, but since discovering mindfulness, I have begun to free myself from this self-imposed pain and found the pleasure of controlling what and when I "think."
Let's not forget: our thoughts drive most of our negative emotion.
Mindfulness is a quest to observe our thoughts and reduce the thoughts that hurt us.
