In Bangladesh, researchers say islands of plastic waste are choking the Karnaphuli River in the country's southeast.
It's considered an economic lifeline for the port city of Chattogram.
But as Al Jazeera's Tanvir Chowdhury reports, officials there say illegal rubbish dumping has hampered efforts to dredge the river.
