After teasing the all-new 2021 S-Class for the past couple of months, Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the entire package. We've already seen the reworked cabin, infotainment, and ambient lighting aspects, as well as the driving and safety assists that do everything from improving side-impact safety by lifting the suspension when a crunch looms, to four-wheel steering.

Now comes the meat. The latest S-Class is larger yet thanks to its new hybrid steel/aluminum structure, where 50 per cent of the body is made of aluminum it’s now up to 60 kilograms lighter while having better rigidity. This aspect not only smooths the ride and reduces road noise, it also improves crash protection.

In Canada, the 2021 S-Class will launch with a 3.0L turbocharged inline-six in the S500, and a twin-turbo 4.0L V8 in the S580, both paired to Mercedes' EQ Boost mild hybrid system. The S500 makes 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque, while the S 580 drives the output to 496 hp and 516 lb.-ft. of torque. EQ Boost adds another 22 horsepower and up to 184 lb.-ft. of torque during acceleration.

The format also banishes turbo lag — the S500 runs from zero to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. Both engines work with a nine-speed automatic transmission and Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. This system is now able to transfer more drive torque forward while being lighter, which again helps fuel economy.
