Raman spectroscopy is a molecular spectroscopic technique, used in industry and academic laboratories that utilizes the interaction of light with matter to gain insight into a material's makeup or characteristics. Both Raman and FTIR spectroscopy provides a spectrum characteristic of the specific vibrations of a molecule and is valuable for identifying many substances. However, Raman spectroscopy can give additional information about lower frequency modes, and vibrations that give insight into crystal lattice and molecular backbone structure. Applications of Raman spectroscopy include:
• Crystallization Processes
• Polymorphism Identification
• Polymerization Reactions
• Hydrogenation Reactions
• Chemical Synthesis
• Biocatalysis and Enzymatic Catalysis
• Flow Chemistry
• Bioprocess Monitoring
• Synthesis Reactions
• Quality by Design (QbD)

Inline Raman spectroscopy is used to monitor crystallization processes and reveal reaction mechanisms and kinetics. Combined with analysis tools, this data enables informed reaction understanding and optimization. Additionally, when coupling a probe to a Raman system it is now possible to measure these bonds and their changes as a function of reaction time. This is valuable to understand reaction characteristics such as kinetics, initiation, endpoint, intermediates, form (crystal form), molecular backbone (polymer chain), and mechanistic information.
