So what’s the best glass that you can get for your iPhone 14? Over the last few months, I’ve tested 29 different screen protectors and the results were surprising to me. There were instances of premium products from brands doing worse than mid-grade products! For this roundup, I added edge strength testing which from my perspective is indicative of quality. Cheap glass manufacturers won’t polish their edge much, resulting in weak glass which breaks easier.

Here’s the Top 10:

A bit more information about the tests:

Oleophobic Coating:
-Each screen protector was placed on a 45 degree ramp.
-An eye dropper was place approx. 1 inch above the 11 cm line
-drops were slowly released (I would let gravity pull the drops, there were no squirting of drops)
-I filmed the drops at 240fps and counted how many frames it took from the water droplet to travel 7 cm
-I did this test a minimum of 10 times and took the average

Impact Testing:
-When compared to previous impact tests, I used the metal punch that came with the force meter
-That punch has worn down significantly so I had to build the wooden stand in the video (now I can refresh the punch each time I do a roundup)
-The stand was placed over the screen protector and pressure was applied until the glass broke
-Maybe I’m getting older and weaker but it took a lot more effort to test the glass this year!

Edge Strength Testing:
-I built a wooden stand with a 15 degree corridor for a flat headed metal punch
-I would place the contraption over the screen protector and line the metal punch diagonally to the screen protector
-On the punch, there’s approx. 1/16 of an inch that isn’t covered in tape. That’s were I lined the case edge up (for consistency)
-I’d place pressure on the meter until it broke
-I will add that my results are relative as the force meter value doesn’t take into account the different force vectors used (90 from the meter transferred to the 75 degree angle punch)
-I did each test until I got 3 consistent breaks. If the setup was too far in, the force would be much higher. If I placed the edge of the punch, it would be much lower.

I will note that the edge strength testing was done after the screen protector was cracked. I did choose spots where there were no cracks but the breaking of the glass may have compromised the overall edge strength. From a relative standpoint, this won’t be an issue as each product was tested in the same way but I am guessing fresh screen protectors might do better in the edge strength testing.

Scratching Testing:
-I took my Moh’s kit and went to town on them
