وليل زين بالبدر
A night that was illuminated by the moon
روى لي قصة الدهر
Told me a story of time

وقد عادوا أولوا كد
Whilst hard working people had returned home
وآب الطير للوكر
And the birds had returned to their nests

فمن ساع إلى خير
So some had worked for goodness
ومن ساع إلى شر
Whilst some had worked for evil

فبعض يمضغ الحلوى
Some people experience the sweetness of life
وبعض لافظ المر
Whilst others experience the bitterness of life

فما حازوا ذوو جهل
The ignorant do not experience
كما حازوا ذوو الفكر
The experience of the educated

هجرت النوم كي أحظى
I parted from sleep so that I may benefit
بما يحظاه ذو الشعر
With that what the poets benefit from (in terms of inspiration and ideas etc)

إذا ما النوم ناجاني
Whenever sleep came to me
سمعت الديك في الأثر
I heard the echoing of the rooster in the background

تعالى الله تنزيها
Glorifying Allah the most High
ألم تقنعن والفجر؟
Will you not satisfy me and teach me the meanings of Surah al Fajr

فلست الصب إذ يشكو
I am not one to complain
بما في الحب من غدر
In regards to the betrayal of the loved ones


فحب الله لي أولى
As the love of Allah is my utmost priority

وما الإشراك بي يسري
And my heart is empty of associating anyone with Allah



ونجم شق مسراه
The star paved its way in the sky
كما قد الهدى صدري
The way guidance paved its way into my chest

إذا ما الموج صخاب
Whenever you see the waves of the sea battering
ترا السفان في ذعر
You will see the captain ( of the Ship) in fear

ينادي الله إعلانا
Calling upon Allah openly and secretly
لكي ينجو وبالسر
So that he may be saved

فليس الموج ذا رفق
So neither is the wave merciful
ولا السفان ذا صبر
And neither is the captain patient against the fierce waves

فيا رباه أرشدني
So oh my lord guide me
إذا ما حرت في أمري
In those issues of mine which have bewildered me

أرى الأيام تطويني
I see the days pass by me
كأن أدري.. ولا أدري
As though sometimes I know and at other times I do not

وما الدنيا سوى جسر
This world is nothing except a bridge
فذا مهدي وذا قبري
Between my cradle and my grave

فعيب المرء أن يلهى
It’s a error for a man to be fooled
بما في الأرض من كفر
With that what is on earth in terms of disbelief etc

إذا ما قلت لا تفسد
Whenever I said to him do not cause mischief on earth
وقم بالحمد والشكر
Rather start by thanking Allah and showing gratitude to him

أشاح الوجه إعراضاً
He turns his face away in emotionlessness
وهز الكف للسخر
And moves his hands in sarcasm (that I advised him)

وصار الريب دعواه
He started doubting my advice
كأن قد جئت بالنكر
As though I have done something strange (by advising him)

لأن المرء فعال
Because he soul of the human is naturally inclined
من الدنيا لما يغري
To do things that mislead him in the world

فنشر الدين في أرض
So spreading religion on earth is like
كزرع الورد في القفر
Planting roses in the desert (so that it becomes a beautiful garden one day)
