What do you do with your old thermal kit when you upgrade to the latest gear? You could sell it on – but Essex farmer and foxshooter Robert Bucknell has a better idea. He can still find a use for the old stuff where, even if outdated, it’s still good enough for some jobs. Today, Robert is helping out a neighbour with a rabbit problem. We are in an arboretum, where the owners have just spent a lot of money surrounding the place with a rabbit-proof fence. The trouble is, a handful of rabbits are now trapped inside.

Why shoot rabbits?
Rabbit shooting, ferreting and catching rabbits with dogs are legal activities in line with UK animal welfare laws. They are designed to remove rabbits, cute but a major pest, from agricultural land, where they dig up ground causing hazards to livestock and they damage crops. Both ferreting and shooting are more selective than the alternative, poisoning rabbits. Rabbit hunting is also social, involving groups of ferret owners or shooters, who go out at weekends and have little or no representation in other media. Plus rabbit meat is lean, healthy and local sourced. Give it a try.
