My 1996 Buick Park Ave has a cool security feature. Instead of the plate bolting down with easy to remove bolts it slides into a groove making it very hard to steal the plate without opening the trunk.

Keep people from stealing your plate then slapping it on a similar ride as yours. Once they have your plate they can do fun things like having a hit and run, going through town or out of state racking up toll fees and potentially speeding tickets, etc.

It will all come back to you as the plate owner. While reporting the plate stolen may help. Some jurisdictions will be very strict that you still owe them for the fees accumulated. If you go out of town etc they may have days to months to do all kinds of fun things filling your mailbox with fines and then good luck when reporting it stolen weeks after fines have accumulated. Your insurance company will see the speeding 20 over etc via speed camera and I am sure they will bring your rates down after you prove the plate was stolen. Yea that will happen.

All easily fixed by just having the plate slide down or up into a thing similar to the one in this video then having a trunk lid or tailgate glass etc close so it can not easily be removed.
