In this video, we ask a question that has been circling around on the internet about how diaphragmatic support really works.

Is Singing Like Taking A Dump? Ken and Gabbi - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy

When I first started my singing academy, I used to tell people that when we are trying to understand diaphragmatic support with regard to singing, that singing was like taking a dump.

In recent years, I've seen other people use the comments that I have made as though they were their own. But I'd like to expound on this very important subject.

We've all heard the expression "man, they have a set of lungs!"; usually in reference to powerful singers. But believe it or not, the lungs have very little to do with "power". The lungs themselves have no muscles. The lungs are operated by the muscles surrounding the abdominal and chest cavities, as well as by the thoracic and pelvic diaphragms.

It's actually a lot more complicated than this, but I'm going to do my best to keep this very simple, using very simple terms - just like the phrase I coined personally: "Singing is like taking a dump" -.

When trying to explain this to someone, I always try to find the simplest ways to get them to understand so they can experience it themselves in a way that makes sense.

If you do an internet image search on the "muscles surrounding the chest", you will notice quite a few different muscle structures that play a role in what is called "core strength".

When we talk, when we yell, when we scream, and when we sing, this entire muscle structure is being engaged. The level at which we want our sound to be is directly related to how these muscle structures need to perform. And yes, of course, not all singing is about shouting at something. There are different degrees, percentages, or variations of the amount of strength required in the abdomen in order to perform the song that you want to perform.

For example, Rock or Opera requires much more strength in the abdomen than R&B or Pop. But these principles still apply straight across the board.

So come join me in this conversation to understand how to utilize your abdominal core strength for singing (and speaking).
