World War I: A hundred years have passed since the outbreak - but it's still hard to grasp the scale and folly of the bloodbath. This documentary covers the war underground around Vauquois, occupied by the Germans since late summer 1914 - in the village, some 40 km from Verdun, the warring parties detonated no fewer than 539 explosives.

The village disappeared from the face of the earth, the surrounding landscape a wasteland with hundreds of explosion craters. To this day, many tons of high explosives are stored underground.
