The new Volkswagen Taigo is a compact five-door SUV with a sloping roofline in the rear, making it more like a coupé model. Before arriving in Europe in early 2022, the Taigo was available on the South American market, known there as the Volkswagen Nivus.
With both manual and automatic transmission models available, the Taigo range consists of several turbocharged petrol engine options that are also found in the T-Cross range, starting with the entry-level 95hp 1.0-litre Taigo Life to the range-topping 150hp 1.5-litre Taigo R-Line.
By stretching the Taigo's length by 150mm compared to the T-Cross, it's surprisingly practical for an SUV that's more about style than functionality. With a 440-litre boot, it only loses 15 litres of space compared to the T-Cross, and it's actually more spacious than the Volkswagen Golf. The interior is well-equipped and feels quite robust. A highlight is the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, with high-spec models getting an 8.0 navigation system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Taigo rides higher than a Golf and it has a better ground clearance, for those who may need it in country areas or wintry roads, but it’s only available in front wheel drive.

The entry-level Volkswagen Taigo Life comes with a suite of driver assistance systems as standard, including Lane Change Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist with front and rear parking sensors. From the outside, the Taigo Life gets 16-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights, LED headlights and some nice black-finished roof rails. Comfort and convenience features include logo projection lighting from the car’s door mirrors; a multifunction camera; lumbar support for the comfortable front seats; electrically-folding door mirrors with electric heating and adjustment; and a multifunction steering wheel.
Prices for the new Volkswagen Taigo start from £22,000 while top-spec models are closer to £30,000
