Alcohol affects every facet of our society. Here are a few facts:

Global Impact:
As per the World Health Organization's Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health 2018, alcohol is responsible for over 3 million deaths (or 5.3% of all deaths) globally each year.
More than three-quarters of these deaths were among men.
Overall, 5.1% of the global burden of disease and injury is attributable to alcohol.

Cancer:
According to the World Cancer Research Fund, drinking alcohol increases the risk of six types of cancer: mouth and upper throat, esophagus, larynx, breast, liver, and bowel. Even small amounts of alcohol intake can increase the risk.
Based on WHO data, alcohol has been estimated to be responsible for about 4.2% of cancer deaths worldwide.

Liver Diseases:
Alcohol is a major cause of cirrhosis, which represented about 47.9% of all liver diseases in a report from the World Health Organization.
In several countries, more than half of liver cirrhosis deaths are attributable to alcohol. For example, in Russia, it's estimated that 66.5% of liver cirrhosis deaths are alcohol-related.
