Surah Al-'Alaq (سورَةُ العَلَق) means clot mass, also known as Iqra' (read), is the 96th surah in the 30th juz' of the Quran. This surah contains five verses of the Quran that God revealed to Prophet Muhammad in Mecca in the cave of Hira' (حِراء).

This Surah has two parts: the first part consists of vv. 1-5, and the second of vv. 6-19. About the first part a great majority of the Islamic scholars are agreed that it forms the very first Revelation to be sent down to the Holy Prophet (upon whom be Allah's peace and blessings).
