Amazon jungle is the world’s largest rainforest Known as the Amazon Jungle, it is a vast forest located in the Amazon River basin of South America. About 55 lakh square kilometers of this forest covering a basin of 70 lakh square kilometers is mainly influenced by humid climate. This forest is spread across 9 countries. 60% of the Amazon forest is in Brazil, 13% in Peru, and the rest in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. Half of the world's rainforests are this forest itself. This Amazon is rich as a habitat for various species. This forest has about 390 billion trees which are divided into about 16000 species.
The name 'Amazon' is believed to be derived from the name of a group of warrior women Amazons who fought with Francisco de Orellana Tapua and other tribes. According to Greek mythology, those women warriors were much stronger and more skilled than men. Orellana derives its name 'Amazon' from the 'Amazon' of Greek mythology as described by Herodotus and Diodorus. The Amazon jungle is home to rare animals and people that cannot be seen anywhere else. The Amazon is home to 8.5 million species of insects, 428 species of amphibians, 378 species of reptiles, and 427 species of mammals. Along with the indescribable beauty, many dangerous animals live in the Amazon. The Amazon is home to the largest and most dangerous snake in the world, the Anaconda. There are also red-eyed frogs, various species of insects, jaguars, monkeys, electric eels, piranhas, poisonous dart frogs, numerous poisonous snakes, and various types of reptiles. Covered with various types of plants, this forest is mostly evergreen trees. So this forest is also called evergreen forest. This forest is half of all the rainforests in the world. Hence it is also called rain forest. Although the Amazon is called a rainforest, it does not mean that it rains throughout the year, but it is called a rainforest because of its high humidity, rainfall, and hot weather. The evaporation rate is high due to extreme heat which leads to high humidity and rainfall. A US scientist has expressed fears that the Amazon rainforest could disappear within the next 50 years. Massive unplanned deforestation would be the cause. James Elcock, a professor of environmental science at Pennsylvania State University, gave this information in an interview with the BBC. According to him, this can happen in an environmental process called a complex reaction. The Amazon forest is significant. 20% of Earth's oxygen comes from the Amazon. For this reason, it is called the lungs of the world. The Amazon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. This forest river or Amazon River is the source of most of the world's rivers. This river supplies a lot of water to the world. Amazon also has 4.5 million species of insects, 428 species of amphibians, 378 species of reptiles and 427 species of mammals. Also, the Amazon River is home to 3,000 species of fish and aquatic animals.
