The Lathrop Homes, Chicago's first public housing project, was constructed between 1937-1938 and featured over 900 apartments on 35 acres of land along the Chicago River. Compared to the high-rise public housing later built in the city, Lathrop had plenty of green space and was in a desirable area. The homes were vacated in 2011 with demolition planned, but thankfully in 2012, Lathrop was added to the National Register of Historic Places, preventing demolition. The north end has since been renovated, while the south end remains abandoned, awaiting eventual renovation plans.
