This is Captain Hudson. He’s 4 inches tall, made of cotton and to look at him you would never know just how many lives he has saved. He looks like he’s just a ball of cuteness, but thanks to the support of thousands of incredible people, he is so much more than that.

There are 1372 Captain Hudsons out there in the world right now with thousands more being made very soon. He’s visited every corner of the globe and has got up to all kinds of weird and interesting things along the way. I’m sure that he must have the highest loyalty status with every cruise line by now and he loves cookies just as much as me.

To understand how we got to this place that's amazing and a little bit bizarre, we need to rewind a year or so.

I was in the kitchen making myself lunch and listening to a podcast when I first heard a mention of something called Mercy Ships. I work in the cruise industry and my ears prick up whenever I hear anything about ships being mentioned anywhere, I just can’t help it.

The person speaking said that they had spent a couple of years volunteering onboard a ship called the Global Mercy and at this point, I’d never heard of this ship but it did sound cool, Global Mercy.

I decided that I wanted to find out more and after a little bit of research, I learnt that Mercy Ships run hospital ships where EVERYBODY onboard is a volunteer. From the surgeons to the chefs and the cleaners, every person has given up months or years of their lives to be there.

It honestly took me back a little bit to realise that there were so many incredible people like that out there who dedicate their lives to this. It’s such a selfless thing to do. Global Mercy holds over 600 people so this isn’t some little boat that just has a few first aid kits onboard, this is an incredible feat of engineering with 6 operating theatres. Mercy Ships has another ship too.

They sail the ships to places that don’t have access to healthcare and they provide treatments and surgeries and education, all for free.
