When it comes to the new Hyundai Venue, we've got some questions. Can you really call it SUV when it doesn’t offer all-wheel drive? Does it offer a lot of value compared to a more conventional hatchback? And when it comes to nice seats and upscale materials is denim the new leather?

The Venue has a big, chrome grille and a two-tone roof on the outside, and a modern and clean interior, with a solid amount of space—at least for the passengers. Cargo space is a different story, at 19 cubic feet behind the rear seats, and only 31.9 cubes when you fold those down. Compare that to the only-slightly larger Kona, which offers up to 45.8.
The denim upholstery is really something. We’ve entered a cool time, past the notion of leather as the only premium material. I mean, Volvo is doing the same thing with its wol seats, so clearly Hyundai’s doing something right.

There’s no all-wheel drive for the Venue, and frankly, the engine’s not too impressive either. 121 horsepower from a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder won’t get you to 60 miles per hour in a hurry, that’s for sure. While a continuously variable transmission is most common, you can still get the base trim with a manual. We actually found the Venue to be pretty athletic through turns, and it’s hard to argue with fuel economy in the 32-mpg range.

If you call it an SUV, the Venue’s starting price of just $17,530 looks mighty impressive. But call it a hatchback, which you may want to do considering the lack of all-wheel drive, and that price looks a little steep.
