Vivid, edgy and delightfully campy: If Netflix didn’t already have a classification system in place, these terms would rightly describe the visual treat that is Ratched.

From the pages of Ken Kesey’s widely argued novel, Nurse Ratched received several homages and adaptations as the quiet, merciless killer. Louise Fletcher’s soft spoken and bone chilling portrayal of the manipulative caregiver won her an Academy Award, and Sarah Paulson now takes the mantle to bring us her backstory. It is a Bates Motel slash Psycho type scenario with producer Ryan Murphy of the American Horror Story fame on the Netflix end of the deal.

Sarah Paulson is uncanny as the steely Mildred Ratched in this origin story that decisively takes a sympathetic look at the pop culture icon. She is joined by Finn Wittock, Cynthia Nixon, Sharon Stone, Judy Davis, Sophie Okonedo,Jon Jon Briones and Vincent D’Onofrio in what could be seen as career defining roles for most. In Murphy's typical style and flair for the grotesque, Ratched culminates as a rewarding, teal coloured departure from Over The Cuckoo's Nest. How it helms its iconic story will be for the stipulated four season stretch to decide.
