Our goal is to bring forth new and vibrant Australian theatrical works to the stage, fostering creativity and showcasing the rich talent within our community. Here’s a glimpse into the three dynamic stages of our program:

1) Play Read
In this collaborative and intimate setting at the Alex Theatre Lounge, actors gather to read through a selection of plays. Fuelled by their passion for the stage, participants explore various works, and the process is both engaging and dynamic. Join us for an evening of literary exploration, where love for the art takes centre stage.

2) Staged Reading
Selected plays from Stage 1 progress to a more refined presentation. Staged readings, reminiscent of radio plays, come alive in front of a paying audience. This immersive experience bridges the gap between script and stage, providing a unique theatrical encounter. Join us for an evening of theatrical storytelling, where every word takes on a life of its own.

3) Full Theatrical Production
The culmination of the Play Reads Development Program is the full-scale theatrical production. Handpicked plays, having undergone thorough exploration and refinement, come to life on the Alex Theatre stage. With a paid cast and crew, we aim to captivate audiences and, with your support, take these productions on a journey beyond our local stage.
