Cartoon Evolution #9

I take a look at the history and evolution of Sylvester the Cat and Tweety Bird, arguably, the most beloved Looney Tunes duo, placed in a straight-man-funny-man comedic formula, in a constant game of cat and mouse, providing a constant source of laughter since their first pairing in 1947, following individual prototype existence many years prior.
While Tweety remains one of the most underutilized star Looney Tunes, Sylvester is the fourth most used behind only Bugs, Porky and Daffy. Together they appeared in 42 classic shorts, while Sylvester appeared in an additional 60 of his own. Together they have won two Academy Awards and been nominated once more – while Sylvester has one additional win and nomination of his own – making him the most-Oscar winning Looney Tune ever!
I take a look at how the duo (with Granny) evolved alongside Warner Bros. other popular characters, including Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Speedy Gonzales and more, and how they co-existed and outshone characters from Disney and other studios, including Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck and Tom & Jerry. I discuss how animators changed his look, appearance and personality over time.
