EV Wars: Europe vs USA

Americans are known for excess while Europeans are known for moderation. But when it comes to the electric vehicle industry, this is not the case. Europeans have 5 times the models to choose from than Americans. 

So why do Europeans have more of a variety of EVs to choose from than Americans?

In this video, we’ll compare and contrast Europe and the U.S.A, in regards to the electric vehicle industry. We’ll look at the differences in car sales, prices, consumer enthusiasm, and politics. By the end of this video, you will understand the reasons for these differences. 

In 2021, about 14 percent of all new vehicles sold in Europe were electric vehicles. In the United States, it was only 4 percent.

In the United States, the most sold electric vehicle in 2021 was the Tesla Model Y, which total units sold was 172,700. The second and third most sold electric vehicles were the Tesla Model 3 and Ford Mustang Mach-E, whose total units were 128,600 and 27,140 respectively.

In Europe, the most sold electric vehicle was the Tesla Model Y like the United States, but the total units sold was 452,400. Almost 2.5 times more than the sold units in the United States. The second and third most sold electric vehicles were the Tesla Model 3 and the Fiat 500 electric, whose total units were 404000 and 331600 respectively.

While it seems like both the United States and Europe enjoy the two different Teslas, it is clear that Europe enjoys them way more since its sales have doubled that of the United States. 

In fact, besides the Tesla Model Y and Model 3, there is no overlap between the rest of their top ten electric vehicles sold. And furthermore, the Tesla Model Y, which is the most sold electric vehicle in the United States, still sold less units than the Hyundai Kona Electric in Europe, which is the ninth most sold electric vehicle in that continent.

This begs the question: Why do Europeans buy so many more EVs than Americans?
