When the AUKUS trilateral security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States was announced on 15 September 2021, it became evident that military cooperation would greatly enhance between these nations.

As per AUKUS Pillar I, Australia will purchase three Virginia-class, conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines in time to replace its current fleet of diesel-electric subs in the 2030s.

Additionally, the three nations will collaborate on the creation of an advanced platform aimed at integrating and maximizing their collective submarine technology. Dubbed the "SSN-AUKUS," this forthcoming platform is scheduled for deployment by the U.K. in the 2030s and Australia in the 2040s.

Though the submarine side of the agreement will take decades to fully come to fruition, the development of other advanced technologies under the agreement is in full swing.

AUKUS Pillar II incorporates four lines of effort: submarine deployable small UUV, subsea, and seabed warfare capabilities; target identification with AI and joint torpedo upgrade & production.
