Farmers make silage piles as a method of preserving and storing forage crops, such as grass, corn, or other green plants, to feed livestock during times when fresh forage is scarce, such as winter months or periods of drought.

The plastic cover acts as a barrier against rain and snow, preventing moisture from entering the silage pile, it also prevents the growth of weeds and other unwanted vegetation on top of the silage.

Once the silage is properly sealed and fermented, it can be stored for an extended period, providing a reliable source of nutrition for livestock when fresh forage is not readily available.

When properly prepared and stored, a silage pile can last for several months to a year or more.
