Explaining penny boards, showing you the alternatives and helping you to decide whether you should buy one?
Want to get it?

Penny boards are tiny plastic cruiser boards that have become very popular and mainstream over the years. Lots of people that don’t necessarily skate probably have one. They’ve become cool to people that aren’t in the skate-industry and as a reaction to that they also get a little hate by skaters.

I’m not going to talk about whether I think they’re cool or not cause to be honest I couldn’t care less. I think the board is an awesome method of transportation and the size of it was the main reason for me to get one.

Let’s take a good look at the product as a whole.
First I wanna make it clear that the penny board comes in three sizes, 22”, 27” and 36”. I’ll only be talking about the 22” one because the small size of that one is the biggest reason I like it so much. If you wanna get a bigger one, you’re really looking at the size of a regular cruiser or longboard and there are tons of other companies that are specialized into that and make better ones for sure.
Those bigger ones also don’t come with grip tape so by that you can already tell that they’re not perfect if you wanna get serious about skate or longboarding.

If the Penny board is the first ever skateboard you’re planning to buy I do recommend learning regular skateboarding first because it’s so damn fun and that way you also understand way more of skateboarding than just riding around. I do get that getting a regular skateboard is also quite expensive and I do have to that it’s not necessary because you can learn to ride around on a penny board just fine. It’s just a bit harder because of the small size. If someone ever tells you it’s not possible to learn how to ride on a penny board they’re probably just full of shit.

However if you’re planning to get into real skateboarding don’t get a penny board as your first skateboard. Yes it's possible to do tricks on it but learning real difficult skate tricks must be learned on a real skateboard.

That leads me to my next point, what are you planning to do with it. Riding on it and getting from point a to b on it is fast and way more comfortable than your regular skateboard. The small size it comes with makes it ideal to just carry around. I can easily strap it on my backpack and I hardly notice it because it just weights less than 2 kilograms, which isn’t the case for my regular board
For me this makes this product just so good, It’s almost as convenient as my bicycle and I can strap it on my backpack.

Are you already a skater and you don’t have a small cruiser yet. Get one!
You don’t you have any skateboarding experience, you don’t really care about skateboarding but you do think it’s fun, you are willing to learn how to ride around on one and you just want to use it for transportation. Get one!
You think skateboarding is cool and you wanna get into it. Then I’d say no! Get a real board and experience real skateboarding. Real skateboarding is so much fun and much more diverse than just riding around on a penny board!
Next, what about the price and the alternatives.
Well as you might know, Penny boards are expensive. The quality of these boards are good but you can get alternatives from other real good legit skate companies aswell. Don’t go to your wallmart or local toy store, go to a skate store or look at skateboarding webshops. These prices of these other good mini cruisers will start at around 50 bucks, they will look exactly the same as a penny board and they’ll also have the same or even better quality. No you will not buy a fake penny board because tiny plastic skateboards have been around since almost the beginning of skateboarding. Some-one that’ll call you out for that is probably a poser except if you’re riding a board that really says penny-board when it’s not from penny.

So, for me, my penny board has been around for a while now. As you see I had to swap out the bearings since someone had thrown mine into a fountain a while back. It’s been really awesome and convenient to me but If I had to buy one right now I would probably get another mini-cruiser from another skateboarding company or I would make the deck itself and buy the rest in a store.
