It’s not uncommon for Ruqya patients to react at home, causing panic to family members.

Follow the steps outlined below to calm the patient and bring them to their senses:

1. Remain calm and do not panic. This will pass.

2. Say Bismillah aloud 3 times.

3. Calm the patient by bringing their person to surface. Do this by calling their name several times until they acknowledge your calls.

4. Slow the patient’s breathing by asking them to slowly count to 10.

5. Encourage the patient to say Bismillah and breath in through the nose and then say Bismillah and breath out through the mouth — do this slowly.

Each time they say Bismillah, say 'Well done' to empower and encourage the patient so that they feel in control. Do this until they calm down. Don't rush when doing this, take your time.

Then call their name a few more times and tell them that you are with them and they will be okay.

In some cases, patients won't be able to say Bismillah with their tongue — in that case ask them to say Bismillah in their mind and heart and then say 'Well done' after a few seconds. Then instruct them to slowly start uttering it with their tongue.

6. Speak to them in short sentences.

7. Be understanding, positive and encouraging. Don’t shout or panic them as this will over stress them and exacerbate the situation.

Tell them that you are here with them, let them know that they are not alone, and that together they will get through this.

If anyone in the room is crying, visibly stressed or shouting instruct them to leave room, and let the calm individuals be around the patient.

8. Do not crowd around them or make them feel claustrophobic.

9. If the patient is standing, ask them to sit down; if they are sitting down, ask them to lay down. Do not force this on them. Always ask them.

10. Give them a glass of cold water. If they are feeling cold, give them warm water.

11. After they have calmed down, and when they are comfortable, ask them to take a shower and apply recited oil on themselves. Let them rest.

12. Spray the rooms with recited water and recite the adhan in each room.

13. If the patient is not responsive, give adhan in the right ear and then the left ear. Apply smelling salts to their noses. If the patient’s teeth are closed, apply recited black seed oil on their teeth. This should wake the patient from their sleep-like state.

14. If you are unable to stabilise the patient, book an emergency home visit or phone session with your local Ruqya clinic.
