This BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe looks like a million bucks, but thankfully costs only barely a tenth of that price.

To make the Gran Coupe, BMW stretched the 2-door 8 Series Coupe by nine inches, to a full length of over 200. Include the wing mirrors, and it’s over 7 feet wide. It weighs 4,200 pounds but stands at barely 4 and a half feet tall. Still, this is an enormous car, and unless you’re cruising the interstate, you’ll likely be aware of that at all times.

The BMW 7 Series made waves with a huge kidney grille up front, and it looks like BMW will be doubling down on that bet with the upcoming 4 Series. However, this grille stretches wide, but not tall. The vertical slats within the kidneys have a nice matte silver finish, and the wide LED headlights keep the front end feeling well balanced.

Interior materials are first-rate: Leather and metal, that’s about it. The iDrive controller and HVAC vents are a nice knurled metal, too. The steering wheel is thick and comfortable, and the armrests are soft—and heated, too. Likewise, the seats a firm but hold up well after hours of driving, and they’ve got plenty of adjustments including extendable thigh cushions.

Unlike Mercedes, with its long, connected driver and infotainment displays, BMW’s gone with two separate units. The center stack gets topped with a 10.25-inch display, controlled either by the iDrive rotary dial, touchscreen inputs, or voice commands.

Under the hood of the 840i trim lives a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine making 335 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque. Pony up for an M850i Gran Coupe and you’ll get a twin-turbo V8 with 523 horsepower, or go full bore for the M8 Gran Coupe, which delivers 600. 617 if you get the M8 Competition.

The BMW 840i Gran Coupe starts at $84,900. That’s more than the Audi S7, way more than a base Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, and just shy of the base Porsche Panamera. On the other hand, it’s $1,550 less than a 7 Series, and $3,000 less than the stunning but impractical 8 Series coupe.
