The Honda Pilot has long been a top choice in this class, but the redesigned Ford Explorer has upped its game dramatically. Honda still has the edge in seating capacity (owing to its three-passenger third row), but the two are near equals in passenger room and cargo space. While the Pilot comes with a single-engine offering, the Explorer boasts three, including a fuel-sipping hybrid and a powerful twin-turbo V6 in the ritzy Limited and the sporty ST. Unless you need the Pilot’s extra seating capacity, the Explorer’s broader spectrum of powertrains and models gives it the bandwidth to be more things to more people.
